The common gallinule, also lovingly referred to as the "swamp chicken," is found in the Everglades and marsh areas throughout the southern and eastern United States. They are easily identifiable by their red face marking and long yellow legs. If you live near a pond, canal, or marsh, you may have heard their very distinctive call. These birds were originally believed to be part of the moorhen family, but were reclassified as a common gallinule in 2011 by the American Ornithologists' Union. Next
